Orthodontic Treatment in Children

If your child's teeth are not aligned properly or there is a suspicion of a disorder in the relationship between the jaws, your child's intraoral structures, teeth, jaw muscles and jaw joints will be examined and the findings will be recorded. Again, when deemed necessary, head, joint and teeth x-rays will be taken and photographs will be taken, with your knowledge. These records are taken routinely during clinical follow-up. These records will be re-examined in the future and will help make the correct diagnosis.

Removable Orthodontic Treatment: Removable orthodontic appliances must be used for 6 months to 3 years in order to correct disorders in teeth, jaw and facial structures within biological limits. Depending on the type of treatment applied, you need to come to check-up appointments at regular intervals.

Problems that may occur during and after the use of mobile appliances:

1) Use of the appliance: Depending on the type of the removable appliance, it may be necessary to use it all day, at night or to remove the appliance during meals. Your physician will explain to you the most appropriate method of use.

2) Pain, feeling of pressure: When the elements of removable appliances are placed on the teeth, there may be pain for the first 1-2 days and may affect your child's daily functions. In addition, it is normal to experience sensitivity and pain in the teeth as a result of the activation of the braces during appointments. If it is a screw-based appliance, the feeling of pressure on your teeth as a result of each turning of the screw is normal and will decrease and disappear within 1-2 days. Apart from this, if you experience persistent and increasing pain or a stinging, shooting or painful problem, contact your doctor by phone.

3) Your child's speech may be impaired on the first day of wearing the appliance. This is a temporary period that lasts at most 1 week. Reading out loud and talking a lot during this time will shorten this process. In the first few days of wearing the appliance, increased salivation and the desire to spit are normal. Continue using the appliance.

4) a-If oral hygiene is not taken into consideration during the treatment and the teeth are not brushed regularly, color changes and caries may occur in the teeth.

b-Cleaning the appliance is important for the health of teeth and soft tissues (gums, palate, lips, etc.). If proper cleaning is not done, soft tissue injuries and various infections may occur.

For this reason, after every meal, your child should brush his teeth and the appliance by holding the acrylic part as recommended by your doctor.

5) The mobile devices applied are made of a chemical substance called acryl. Although very rare, an allergy may develop to this substance. In this case, consult your doctor immediately.

6) Food items to be avoided: When using a moving apparatus, hard foods such as plums, hazelnuts, walnuts, and sticky substances such as chewing gum cause the apparatus to break and deteriorate its structure. It is very important to stay away from such foods throughout the treatment. We think you will help your doctor in this matter and thank you.

7) After treatment with removable appliances, your doctor will inform you about whether different treatments will be required if necessary.

8) If the appliance is broken or lost, you may have to pay a certain fee for a new appliance. Apart from this, your appliance may need to be renewed during your treatment if your doctor deems it appropriate.

9) Patient compliance: The patient is directly responsible for the continuity of the treatment. Cooperating with your doctor and doing what is asked of you will make your child's treatment easier and shorter. If you do not help your doctor in this regard, your doctor is not responsible for the progress of your treatment and the lack of any progress.

Fixed Orthodontic Treatment

In order to correct the disorders in teeth, jaw and facial structures within biological limits, orthodontic appliances, called fixed treatment, should be used for approximately 1-3 years, and then the treatment should be continued by using removable appliances, called mobile treatment. Fixed and mobile appliances are orthodontic treatment methods routinely used in our clinic. Depending on the type of treatment applied, you need to come to check-up appointments at regular intervals.

Problems that may occur during and after using fixed appliances:

A) Pain: The forces applied to the brackets (orthodontic parts) placed on the teeth can be quite painful for the first 1-2 weeks and may affect daily functions. In addition, it is normal to experience sensitivity and pain in the teeth for 1-2 days as a result of the activation of the braces during appointments. Apart from this, if you experience persistent and increasing pain or a stinging, shooting or painful problem, contact your doctor by phone.

B) Oral care: Oral care is very important in orthodontic treatment. Brackets attached to the teeth increase food retention, and as a result, attachments and food accumulate on the teeth more easily. If oral hygiene is not taken into consideration during the treatment and the teeth are not brushed regularly, color changes and caries may occur in the teeth. In addition, gum problems may occur, which manifest themselves as gum enlargement, bleeding and inflammation, and may lead to bone loss. As a result, your child may lose one or more of his teeth. In addition to these, you may encounter complaints of bad breath. The patient and his/her parents are responsible for cleaning the teeth during orthodontic treatment and for any problems that may develop due to lack of hygiene. In some sensitive individuals, allergic reactions such as redness, rash and swelling may occur in the mouth or body. When you encounter such a situation, you need to contact your doctor as soon as possible.

C) Food items to avoid: Your doctor may ask you to stay away from certain foods during the fixed treatment. Acidic carbonated drinks facilitate tooth decay and cause discoloration. They can also cause the parts attached to the teeth to break off. Hard foods such as plums, hazelnuts, walnuts and sticky substances such as chewing gum also cause brackets to break and break. It is very important for you to stay away from such foods throughout the treatment. We think you will help your doctor in this matter and thank you.

D) Patient compliance: In fixed treatment, the patient is directly responsible for the continuity of the treatment. Your physician may ask you to use some auxiliary orthodontic devices and elements that can be attached and removed at different times of the treatment. In this case, cooperating with your doctor and doing what is asked of you will make the treatment easier and shorter. If you do not help your doctor in this regard, your doctor is not responsible for the treatment not progressing and no progress being made.

E) Return after orthodontic treatment: If the removable appliances that should be used to preserve the improvement achieved after the end of fixed treatment are not used in accordance with your physician's recommendations, deteriorations in teeth and jaw relations may occur. However, it is natural for there to be some regression at the end of fixed treatment due to various reasons. Your physician will do his best to minimize this situation. You must also sign a patient consent form for the treatment options described above and recommended to you by your physician.
