Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is the removal of the vascular-nerve tissue inside the tooth, cleaning the space where this tissue is located from bacteria and debris, and filling the root canal with various filling materials. In a living tooth, root canal treatment may be required due to the decay reaching the vascular nerve tissue, or as a result of the tooth losing its vitality and becoming inflamed. If root canal treatment is not performed on an inflamed tooth, the infection in the root canal can reach the tissues at the root tip.

The jawbone surrounding the tooth also becomes inflamed and eroded. An abscess forms in this space. This condition is accompanied by pain and swelling, and eventually the tooth may be lost. If the tooth is alive, anesthesia is applied to the tooth for a painless treatment. If the tooth is dead, anesthesia is not needed because it will not feel pain. Then, the decay is cleaned and nerve and tissue residues are removed with various canal files and washing solutions. Between sessions, the tooth is covered with temporary filling materials until the tooth heals.

After it is understood that the inflammation in the inflamed teeth has stopped and the inflammation from the root tip has stopped, the canal is filled with a special filling material up to the root tip. There is no need for these sessions in non-inflamed teeth, and it is possible to complete the root canal treatment in a healthy way in a single session. Your doctor decides how many sessions the treatment will take depending on the situation. After the treatment, complaints of mild pain and sensitivity in the tooth may occur, but this is temporary. In this case, the best solution is not to use the side where that tooth is located too much for a few days. After a short time, it will be seen that the sensitivity disappears. The success rate of properly performed root canal treatments is around 95%. The fragility of the root canal treated tooth is higher than that of normal teeth, and some dulling may occur in the color of the tooth. If oral care is done well and the tooth does not become infected again or fracture occurs, the tooth can be used for a lifetime. However, the tooth may need to be extracted due to complications such as decay, perforation or fracture that occur during root canal treatment or at any time after treatment.

RETREATMENT (CANAL TREATMENT RENEWAL)

The process of re-performing root canal treatment that was previously performed but failed for various reasons is called Retreatment. Failure to completely remove the infection or clean all the canals causes the root canal treatment to fail. In retreatment of root canals, all restorative materials applied in the previous treatment are removed. In unsuccessful root canal treatments, infection usually occurs and its removal is a very difficult process.

Of course, if a tooth has undergone unsuccessful root canal treatment, it will also reduce the chance of success of the new treatment. Because the difficulties in the region have increased and a stronger bacterial content has arrived. In some cases, the treatment of a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment is difficult. For example, if the tooth has a post and a newly made crown, endodontic surgery can be applied to the tooth instead of root canal treatment. However, after a poorly performed or unsuccessful treatment, immediate tooth extraction should not be considered; the tooth should be given another chance for treatment. However, the tooth may still need to be extracted due to complications such as perforation, fracture, breakage of the used root canal files inside the tooth, or re-infection that may occur during the re-canal treatment or at any time after the treatment.

IN-CHANNEL POST APPLICATION

In teeth whose crown part is severely damaged, it is sometimes necessary to get support from the root of the tooth in order to ensure the retention and durability of the filling. In this case, root canal treatment and intra-canal post can be applied to the tooth, so that even teeth with only roots can be restored and remain in the mouth. Although metal posts were used before, today light-permeable "fiber-posts", which have emerged with the developing technology, are used. Fiber posts have higher aesthetic properties and resistance and can be applied in a shorter time. The "fiber-post" placed in the prepared root canal is glued with radiation and self-hardening adhesives (resin cement), then a direct beam filling is placed on it and the appropriate infrastructure for the crown is prepared. It may not be suitable for post application to every tooth; your doctor decides whether post application can be applied to your tooth. During post application, root perforation, fracture may occur, or the adhered post may become dislodged again, in which cases the tooth may need to be extracted.

RULES AND GENERAL WARNINGS THAT PATIENTS SHOULD CONSIDER AFTER THE TREATMENT

Routine oral care procedures (brushing teeth twice a day with toothpaste, using dental floss) should not be disrupted.

After root canal treatment and re-canal treatment, complaints of mild pain, sensitivity and swelling may occur in the tooth, but this situation is temporary. Care should be taken when biting hard foods with root canal treated teeth. Teeth with posts usually require crowns. If your physician recommends crowning the tooth, do not ignore it.

Otherwise, the filling placed on the tooth or post may break again. Regarding the general health conditions of the patients who will undergo endodontic treatment (allergy, risk of previous infectious diseases) diseases, ongoing treatments, medications used and/or currently being used, previous surgeries, etc.) It is mandatory to inform the physician, and if the physician is not deemed suitable for treatment, some examinations and relevant Opinions may be requested from doctors.

Allergic and toxic reactions, temporary facial paralysis, etc. due to anesthesia before endodontic treatment. Undesirable situations may occur. These situations are temporary and there is no need to worry. Duration of loss of sensation, It varies depending on the anesthetic agent used, the area where anesthesia is applied and the anatomical structure of the person. You should be careful not to eat solid foods that require chewing until the effect of local anesthesia wears off. Process injury to the surrounding hard and soft tissues, dislocation of the jaw joint, use of instruments used in root canal treatment, swallowing as a result of sudden reflexes in the patient, crown or root perforations, tool breaks in the root canal, irrigation overflow of the solution from the root tip of the tooth, irrigation solution into the patient's mouth or face. Complications such as splashing/spilling, pain and swelling after the procedure may occur. Endodontic treatment started Depending on the condition of the tooth during the treatment process, when deemed necessary, extraction of the relevant tooth or further surgery after treatment The patient may be referred to the surgical department for procedures. Since endodontic treatment may take several sessions depending on the condition of the tooth, temporary filling used in intermediate sessions The material may fall or the tooth may break. In such cases, the physician should be informed and an urgent appointment should be made. must be requested. After any procedure performed in our clinic, physician recommendations should be strictly followed and appointments should be made regularly. should be reached. Requests for appointment changes during the treatment should be informed to the physician at least 1 week in advance.
