orthodontic treatment;
Orthodontic treatment greatly affects overall oral health positively. In addition, it ensures harmony between teeth, facial structures and a healthy, beautiful smile. A harmonious smile not only increases a person's self-confidence but also improves their quality of life. Thanks to well-aligned teeth, teeth can be brushed more easily, thus reducing the risk of disease related to teeth, gums and supporting tissues. The most important thing that cannot be known at the beginning in
orthodontic treatments is the response to the treatment and the patient's ability to cooperate with the physician during the procedures . For
a successful orthodontic treatment;
1. The patient must have information about the treatment that will be given to him. Generally, informed patients do not experience compliance difficulties. Positive results are obtained in compliant patients.
2. Orthodontic Treatment is a long-term treatment that requires discipline. Patient-physician-family cooperation is essential for a good outcome.
3. The patient must follow the treatment prescribed by the physician completely and completely. In case of lack of compliance arising from the lack of cooperation of the patient and his family, the physician has the right to terminate the treatment.
4. If you accept the treatment, your oral structures, teeth, jaw muscles and jaw joints will be examined and the findings will be recorded.
5. Dental and head x-rays and tooth-jaw measurements must be taken for diagnostic purposes at the beginning of the treatment, for control purposes during the treatment, and for detailed examination of the teeth and surrounding tissues after the treatment. In order to monitor treatment changes more clearly, photographs must be taken from inside and outside the mouth. In the diagnosis and treatment of some orthodontic anomalies and joint disorders, it may be necessary to request further examinations ( Magnetic Resonance Imaging-MRI, Computerized Tomography-CT, consultation from other dentistry or medical departments).
6. The necessary records are taken at regular intervals during the treatment. These records may be re-examined in the future and may be necessary to make a correct diagnosis and to carry out the treatment properly. These records can be used in scientific publications and presentations in our orthodontics department without stating your identity. These records will not be used for other purposes and will not be given to others.
7. The presence of any systemic disease related to the patient's general health condition (blood diseases, bone diseases, hormonal disorders, allergic diseases, etc. may affect orthodontic treatment. You must inform us about these and similar diseases and any changes in the patient's health status during the treatment.
8. In order to correct the disorders in your teeth, jaw and facial structures within biological limits, you may need to use
orthodontic appliances for 6 months - 4 years. Depending on the type of treatment applied, you must attend regular check-up appointments at certain intervals. TREATMENTS AND PROCEDURES APPLIED IN ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT: Elimination of problems during this treatment It is necessary to use various appliances for certain periods of time.
These are called MOVABLE INTRAORAL APPARATUS / FIXED INTRAORAL APPARATUS . One or all of these appliances can be used at different times or at the same time when necessary.
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT MOVABLE INTRAORAL APPARATUS:
1. Usage of the Appliance: Your removable appliance Depending on the type, the appropriate use will be explained to you.
2. Pain, feeling of pressure: When removable appliances are placed on your teeth, there may be pain for the first 1-2 days and may affect your daily functions. In addition, it is normal to have sensitivity and pain in your teeth as a result of the activation of the braces during appointments. If it is a screw-based appliance, the feeling of pressure on your teeth as a result of each turning of the screw is normal and will decrease and disappear within 1-2 days. Apart from this, if you experience constant and increasing pain or a stinging, shooting or painful problem, please contact us by phone.
3. You may experience a slight disturbance in your speech on the first day of wearing the appliance. This is a temporary period that lasts at most 1 week. Reading something out loud and talking a lot during this period will shorten this process. It is normal for your saliva to increase and your desire to spit out in the first few days of wearing the appliance. Continue using your apparatus.
4. Attention should be paid to oral hygiene throughout the treatment. If the teeth are not brushed regularly, color changes, scars and cavities may occur.
5. Cleaning your appliance is important for the health of your gums and soft tissues (gums, palate, lips). If proper cleaning is not done, soft tissue irritations and various infections may occur. For this reason, you should brush your teeth and appliance after every meal as recommended by your physician. However, sometimes sores may occur inside the mouth when using these appliances. If you encounter such a situation, contact us and the parts causing these wounds will be corrected.
6. The mobile devices applied are made of a chemical substance called " acryl ". Although very rare, an allergy may develop to this substance. In this case, contact us immediately.
7. While using a removable appliance, hard foods such as plums, hazelnuts, walnuts, and sticky substances such as chewing gum while the appliance is in your mouth cause the appliance to break and deteriorate its structure. It is very important for the course of your treatment that you stay away from such foods while your appliance is in your mouth. We think you will help us in this regard and thank you.
8. After treatment with removable appliances, you will be informed about whether different treatments will be required if necessary.
9. If the apparatus is broken or lost, you may have to pay a certain laboratory fee for a new apparatus. Apart from this, your appliance may need to be renewed when we deem it appropriate during your treatment.
10. Patient compliance: The patient is directly responsible for the healthy continuation of the treatment. Cooperating with us and doing what is asked of you will make your treatment easier and shorter. If you do not help your doctor in this regard, it is natural that your doctor will not be responsible for your treatment not progressing and no progress being made. The success of your treatment depends on the proper use of the appliances given to you.
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT FIXED ORTHODONTIC TREATMENTS
Before starting the treatment, your dentist should examine all your teeth, any decayed teeth should be treated, root canal treatment should be performed on the necessary teeth and scaling should be done if necessary. Your
orthodontic treatment consists of two periods, active and passive, and depends on the severity of your orthodontic problem and your body's response to the treatment . . It may take years . Some problems that may be encountered during this period are listed below. In order to overcome these problems, it is important to follow the treatment rules, attend appointments regularly and cooperate with your physician .
For treatment purposes, retaining parts (brackets) will be glued to the teeth and wires will be passed through them. When necessary, screws placed in the jawbone for support purposes; jaw-expanding screw devices; metal springs, rubber chains, etc. can be used. Sometimes it may be necessary to use extra-oral devices ( devices such as neck brace /face mask) or intra-oral rubber rings that must be put on and removed by the patient. If deemed appropriate, other devices may be placed in your upper and/or lower jaw or outside the mouth during your treatment. Instructions regarding their use must be followed exactly.
Extraction orthodontic treatment: If there is not enough space in the patient's upper/lower jaw for the teeth to line up properly, extraction orthodontic treatment must be performed to eliminate the existing problem in the mouth. Extraction orthodontic treatment is a treatment performed by extracting teeth that your doctor deems medically appropriate. The spaces created by tooth extraction will be used to eliminate space constraints and/or correct the closure of the teeth, and these spaces will be filled by replacing the teeth outside the tooth row at the end of the treatment. Surgical treatment:
In cases such as extraction of wisdom teeth, orthodontic teeth, treatment of soft tissue anomalies, uncovering of impacted teeth, cooperation is made with oral, dental and maxillofacial surgeons. In jaw anomalies, if the case is very severe, orthodontic treatment alone will not be sufficient. Working and planning together with plastic surgeons may be required for defects , syndromes, anomalies and malformation groups involving the jaw bones . Cleft lip and palate: Feeding plate or early orthopedic interventions can be applied to babies with cleft lip and palate. For these purposes, it is necessary to take measurements from babies. During these procedures, the baby's parents assist the doctor. There is a danger of swallowing or aspirating this substance if the baby is not held correctly or if too much size is placed . Appliances applied to babies should be tied to the baby's collar with a clean rope. These devices can also be swallowed during sleep.
Patients may experience some negativities during orthodontic treatment. In order to avoid these problems and/or overcome them easily, the rules explained to you must be followed.
RULES THAT PATIENTS RECEIVING ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT MUST FOLLOW AND PROBLEMS THAT MAY EXPERIENCE
1. Pain: The forces applied by metal or ceramic brackets attached to your teeth can cause pain and ache in the teeth for the first week or so and sometimes affect your daily functions. In addition, it is normal for your teeth to experience sensitivity and pain for 1-2 days as a result of the activation of the braces in some appointments. Apart from this, if you experience constant and increasing pain or a stinging, shooting or painful problem, please contact us by phone.
2. Oral care: Oral care is very important in orthodontic treatment. Brackets attached to your teeth increase food retention, and as a result, attachments and food accumulate on your teeth more easily. No attention is paid to oral hygiene throughout the treatment; If the teeth are not brushed regularly, color changes, white and brown stains and cavities may occur on the teeth. In addition, gum problems may occur, manifested by enlargement of the gums, bleeding and inflammation, and leading to bone loss. In addition to these, you may encounter complaints of bad breath. For this reason, teeth should be brushed regularly after main and snack meals until you are sure that all food residues are removed. The patient is responsible for cleaning his teeth during
orthodontic treatment and for any problems that may develop due to lack of hygiene. PATIENTS WHO DO NOT PROVIDE ENOUGH ORAL CARE WILL BE WARNED TWICE, BUT THE TREATMENT OF PATIENTS WHO COME TO OUR CLINIC WITH THESE PROBLEMS FOR THE 3rd TIME WILL BE TERMINATED WITHOUT ACCEPTING ANY EXCUSES.
3. Food items to avoid: We will ask you to avoid certain foods during the fixed treatment. Acidic and carbonated drinks facilitate tooth decay and cause discoloration. It may also cause the parts attached to the teeth to break off. Hard foods such as plums, hazelnuts and walnuts, and sticky substances such as chewing gum cause the device to break and deteriorate its structure. It is very important for the course of your treatment that you stay away from such foods throughout your treatment. We think you will help us in this regard and thank you.
4. During orthodontic treatment, some patients may experience shortening of their tooth roots. Since this condition can be affected by many genetic, individual and environmental reasons, it may cause serious problems in some patients. If there is a serious shortening, the treatment may be terminated by us.
5. Allergic reactions such as redness, rash and swelling may occur in some sensitive individuals. When you encounter such a situation, you must contact us as soon as possible.
6. Jaw joint problems: Rarely, problems such as pain, noise, headaches or earaches may occur in the jaw joint. However, all these reasons are also frequently observed in patients who do not receive orthodontic treatment. However, any pain, headache or non-functional findings related to the jaw joint area during treatment should be reported to the doctor immediately.
7. Loss of vitality in teeth: Teeth may lose vitality due to a previous injury or large restorations on the teeth. Orthodontic tooth movement can worsen this condition and rarely require root canal treatment.
8. Breaking and swallowing of appliances: Appliances accidentally used in the mouth can be chewed, broken, and sometimes even parts of the appliances can be swallowed. If it is found that there is a missing part, a doctor should be consulted.
9. Intraoral injuries-scratches: Parts of orthodontic appliances may disturb soft tissues such as lips and cheeks in function or rest position. Adaptation of soft tissues develops quickly, but sometimes doctors recommend their patients to cover the appliances with protective wax to make this period more comfortable. Sometimes, while working with dental instruments, accidental tooth or soft tissue injuries may occur, as in all other branches. However, our doctors are making maximum efforts to prevent this from happening.
10. Extra-oral appliance injuries: In some cases, appliances with extra-oral support are used to transmit force to the teeth or jaws. When these devices are used carelessly, they can cause serious injuries to the face and eyes. For this reason, it is recommended that these devices not be used in activities such as sports. Again, these appliances may cause side effects such as slight redness, itching or thinning of hair on the areas they support. In patients who progress under the supervision of a doctor and use their appliance consciously, such effects usually do not occur at all or develop in very insignificant amounts.
11. Unfavorable growth pattern in patients: Sometimes deficiencies in the growth pattern or atypical development of a tooth limit treatment possibilities and affect the targeted result. If an incompatible growth-development pattern is encountered during or after treatment or if a tooth develops prematurely, the closure may change. Therefore, retreatment or surgical support may be required. Growth irregularities and abnormal tooth development are biological processes that are not under the control of the orthodontist, and a change in growth after treatment directly affects the quality of treatment.
12. Prolongation of treatment time: Patient noncompliance, excessive or weak bone development, missing appointments, breakage or rupture of appliances, and poor oral hygiene prolong treatment time and reduce the quality of treatment.
13. Patients with poor oral hygiene, patients who do not attend their appointments periodically, and patients who do not attend their appointments for 6 months will be excluded from treatment. REINFORCEMENT TREATMENT At the end of each orthodontic treatment, there is a tendency for the teeth to move and return to their original position at the beginning of the treatment. For this reason, "Reinforcement Treatment", which is a passive orthodontic treatment, should be started as soon as active orthodontic treatment is completed . In this treatment, a fixed and/or mobile reinforcement device that the physician deems appropriate for the patient is used. If a removable reinforcement appliance is made, this appliance should be used full day and night for at least half of the active orthodontic treatment period, and then it should be used at night for at least this amount of time. However, it is recommended to use reinforcement appliances for life to ensure the permanence of the completed orthodontic treatment. It is very important to use reinforcement appliances in accordance with the instructions and to attend regular check-ups as deemed appropriate by the physician for the permanence of the treatment result.
If the appliances used in the reinforcement treatment are not used and/or the teeth are not checked, there is a tendency for the teeth to move and return to their original position at the beginning of the treatment, the second orthodontic treatment is not paid by the state. The patient has to pay the fee for this orthodontic treatment with his own means.
